History of World Cinema

This module will present the history of cinema, from its beginning in the end of 19th century, to the present day. It will discuss the main changes, which took place during this time, such as emergence of specific genres and the very concept of genre, Hollywood as an institution, first, second and third cinema, art house and popular cinema. It will familiarize students with some of the most important film movements, such as New Waves and auteurs. The focus will be on American and European cinema, but there will be also sessions dedicated to non-European filmmakers.
